The Problem

Most carnivorous plants are killed by the wrong media.

Standard potting mix is designed to feed plants. Carnivorous plants evolved in nutrient-depleted environments where their roots couldn’t sustain them — so they developed trapping mechanisms instead.

Put a Sarracenia in conventional potting mix and you introduce conditions incompatible with its biology. The damage is cumulative and usually irreversible by the time it shows.

The problem isn’t the grower. It’s what goes in the bag.

  • ×
    Lime or dolomite
Raises pH above tolerance range. Root damage begins immediately.
  • ×
    Worm castings or compost
Introduces soluble nutrients. Disrupts the biological feedback that drives trapping behavior.
  • ×
    Bark fines or wood products
Decomposes over time. pH creep. Fungal load increase.
  • ×
    Any fertilizer
Initial green flush followed by irreversible root burn. No exceptions.
  • ×
    Tap water
Mineral accumulation. Second most common cause of slow decline. Distilled or RO only.
The Formula

Three ingredients.
Each one earns its place.

60%
Canadian Sphagnum Peat
Primary structure
Native pH 3.5–4.5. Holds moisture without waterlogging. Zero soluble nutrients. The foundation every bog plant evolved in.
25%
Coarse Perlite
Aeration & drainage
Prevents compaction. Maintains air pockets in the root zone long-term. Fully inert — will not alter pH or chemistry over time.
15%
Cherry Stone #1
Quartzite Grit
1/16” — US-sourced natural quartzite
Distinct particle structure pure peat-perlite blends lack. 100% natural crushed quartzite. Insoluble, non-staining, traceable to a US manufacturer.
Target pH Range
3.5 – 5.0
Achieved naturally through sphagnum peat. No acidifiers added. No pH adjustment required.
Works With

Formulated for the genera
that demand exactness.

01
Sarracenia
Pitcher Plant
All species and hybrids. Cold-hardy to Zone 5 outdoors with dormancy management. Zone 6 tested, Florence, Kentucky.
02
Drosera
Sundew
Temperate and subtropical species. Filiformis and rotundifolia overwinter in Zone 6. Tropical species in container culture.
03
Dionaea muscipula
Venus Flytrap
All cultivars. Media pH is critical — this mix delivers it without adjustment. Tray method required.
04
Nepenthes
Tropical Pitcher Plant
Lowland and highland species in container culture. The moisture retention profile of this formula suits both.

Distilled water.
Every single time.

Tap water minerals accumulate in carnivorous plant media and damage roots over time. It is the second most common cause of slow decline in otherwise healthy plants. This is a biological requirement, not a preference.

Zone 6 tested.
Bog-accurate.

I’ve been growing carnivorous plants alongside Adenium, Plumeria, and Pachypodium in Zone 6 Northern Kentucky since the mid-1990s. The biology is completely different from desert species — but the principle is identical. Understand what the plant evolved in and replicate those conditions precisely.

DarkWater Bog Media is formulated from 30-plus years of watching what actually works when your climate fights you. Sarracenia x moorei overwinters in my operation without supplemental heat. Zone 6 is not a barrier to growing these plants — it’s a filter that produces better growers.
